Week Two at the Y

Hey campers and parents!  This week was Party in the USA week in Discovery Camp, and campers really did have a party!  Discovery campers participated in a variety of different activities that circled around American Pride, MVP campers enjoyed a week of all American Sports and Specialty Camp cooked up something spicy!
MVP Camp this week both learned and played many different sports.  From Lacrosse to Volleyball, every field was covered.  Campers participated in races against their friends and counselors on Track and Field Day, and then played a huge all-camp volleyball game on Volleyball Day.  Today, the campers left the Seminary and headed to the Princeton Y for the waterslide and BBQ!

This week’s Specialty Camp was Camp Chefs.  Chefs made a variety of different foods, including Dirt Cups, Strawberry Banana Smoothies, Crepes, and Burritos!  As well as learning how to cook different foods, campers took a trip to Chevy’s in Lawrenceville to take a tour of the kitchen.  Also, while making these fun treats, campers worked on their cookbooks that they will be taking home at the end of the week.  Camp Chefs counselor Miranda explained what surprised especially her.  “The kids were really good at participating in the kitchen.  It was really exciting for me to see.”  Camper Leilani told us the most important thing that she learned this week.  “I learned that it’s better to eat healthy and that you should probably eat fruits, grains and vegetables.”  Camp Chefs also joined Discovery for the BBQ and waterslide later today. Discovery Camp’s Party in the USA week had the campers hit the ground running in preparation for the big celebration at the end of the week.  Every day at the All Camp Activity, the campers made crafts that were centered around America, and that would also be used for the parade on Friday.  On Monday, campers created the banners that they would be carrying in front of their floats.  On Tuesday the kids got in the celebrating spirit with the carnival that was arranged by the Leadership Academy.  This carnival included pie throwing, water balloon tosses, and making snow cones.  Voyager Camper Jermaine stated what his favorite part of the carnival was.  “Putting the pie in my counselors face.  That was amazing.”  Wednesday, the campers made mini flags to proudly flourish along with their banners.  Thursday, campers let loose with some All-American fun:  a dance party!  Today, the campers topped off the week with their parade and BBQ to allude to the real Fourth of July celebrations this weekend.
Leadership Academy was busy this week as well.  Last week, Leaders brainstormed various ideas for entertainment for the next week.  Finally, it was decided that a carnival would be an activity the campers would love.   All of Monday was spent in preparation for the event that was to take place on Tuesday.  Through Monday and early Tuesday, leaders made posters, gathered items for the stations, and set up different stands near the playground.  The campers loved the carnival!  The other big event of the week was the trip to the Trenton Soup Kitchen.  On Thursday, the Academy prepared bagged lunches for the trip.  Friday, they were able to take a break from their good deeds to sit back and enjoy the BBQ and Waterslide.

Next week, camp MVP is going rolling skating on Wednesday, and then playing Goofy Games on Friday.  The specialty camp of next week is Around the World, where campers, each day, will learn about a different nation.  At the end of the week, they will bring home a personalized passport and world map.  Then, the third week of summer will get started with Holidaze Craze.  Get ready for Halloween at the Y, Turkey Day in July, and maybe even your UNBirthday.  Remember, no camp on Monday, so have a nice break and get ready for a great week!
