Super Science

This week, Specialty Campers took part in Camp Super Science, where campers learned about chemistry, physics, and other science-themed subjects through fun activities.  To introduce campers to what it was that they would be doing on Monday, Super Science participants discussed what they arleady knew about  science and safety rules, and then drew pictures of an experiment they wanted to do this week.  Later that morning, Super Science studied the dynamics of plants through the Flower Absorption experiment.  Here, the daisies turned blue because water traveled up into the petals through the stem.

On Tuesday, campers focused on Geology and Earth Science.  After learning about the water cycle and sedimentary rocks, campers made a model of sediments at the bottom of a body of water by filling a Gatorade Bottle with plaster, pebbles, and sand.  Then they shook it up to see how the rocks settle to test their hypotheses.  None of the campers expected that the rocks would settle from heaviest to lightest.  Nine-year-old Kevin says that his favorite part of this week was, "making layers of sediment and putting the water on top of it.  It was realy cool to see what happened with the different rocks."  The next day, Super Science went to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.

Cassidy, eight years old, explained why Wednesday was her favorite day so far:  "We took a trip to the Franklin Institue; we had so much fun!  We got to go to the gift shop and get really cool polished rocks.  They were so samll!"

Thursday, Super Science made contraptions to protect an egg that would be dropped from a rooftop.  In the end, seven out of nine eggs made it safely to the ground without a crack.  Today, campers created a geyser out of Diet Coke and a Mento mint.  The mint was dropped into a two-liter bottle of soda, and campers wathced in awe as the soda exploded ten feet into the air!  After the all-camp BBQ, Super SCience finished off the great week by making GAK, a mixture of Elmer's Glue and powdered soap.  The campers loved making this ooey-gooey plasma, and they even got to take it home!

Next week, Kamping Kids is the Specialty Camp.  "Kampers" will get to climb rocks, learn to pitch a tent, and even go on an overnight camping trip!  We can't wait until next week!
