Specialty Camp Week Five

This week Specialty Camp “Kamping Kids” demonstrated three core values that are very important to the YMCA. While tubing on the Delaware River campers practiced their rafting  and safety knowledge by helping fellow campers in and out of the tube, warning other campers when the rapids were coming and which way to paddle on the river. Camper Amanda’s quote “We are all in this together!” solidified the Y core value of Caring. Campers showed their Respect through listening and helping counselors while on the Delaware River.  Campers realized the importance of tubing safety through their tubing drills they had practiced in the Y pool. If a counselor needed everyone’s attention campers quickly stopped what they were doing and gave the counselor their undivided attention. Counselor Emily said, “It was like we had a little team of CIT’s (Counselors In Training)”.
When the Campers returned to the Y for their overnight they showed Responsibility by not giving up when they made and set up their tents. Counselor Mike said, “The kids were working so hard, they didn’t want to stop until the job was done”. On Friday campers showed responsibility again by waking up early and cleaning their campsite as a team.  Campers worked together to employ their weeklong lessons about “Leave No Trace”. Completing this last “Kamping” task really gave the kids a sense of camp-wide camaraderie. Counselor Miranda said, “Some campers got themselves and other campers up to clean. Before we left they searched for any extra trash”. Through the various activities that exemplified the Y core values, our Kamping Kids showed that the YMCA is continuing to instill great values in the youth of the Princeton community!
